Chapter 19: A Gift for Xiao Yu
When Meng Weiyu saw Xie Wenxuan’s smiling face, he froze for a moment. Then he also smiled cheerfully and said casually, “What a coincidence. Are you eating here at this hour?”
“Are you going to treat me?” Xie Wenxuan joked.
“No. If you want me to treat you, I have to be present.” Meng Weiyu proudly propped up his chin with his hand, the corners of his mouth lifting. He was very willing to treat people, provided the guests made him happy. But the way to coax him was extremely simple. Others could casually humor him a little, and he would float to the heavens by himself.
“What a stingy ghost.” Xie Wenxuan did not care about the cost of one meal at all. There was a smile on his face, filled with probing meaning. Then he sounded Meng Weiyu out. “That doesn’t seem to be your schoolbag.”
“Oh, it really isn’t.” Meng Weiyu was good at sensing when others were trying to cover something up. Almost instantly, he raised his warning line toward Xie Wenxuan.
Although on the surface, he showed nothing unusual.
“I saw you eating with Shen Zhoudu.” Although Xie Wenxuan and Meng Weiyu’s relationship was not especially deep, he knew that with the personality of the person in front of him, if he did not speak directly, then even by the time Meng Weiyu left, their conversation probably would not progress anywhere.
“You saw?” Meng Weiyu laughed aloud. Then he raised his hand and crooked his finger at Xie Wenxuan, signaling for him to come over.
Xie Wenxuan happily leaned closer.
Just as he was about to cross the usual sense of distance and approach Meng Weiyu, the finger Meng Weiyu had crooked toward himself instantly flipped downward, then pointed straight at him.
Xie Wenxuan stopped in front of his finger, as if Meng Weiyu’s action carried the force of an order.
“So what?” Meng Weiyu looked at Xie Wenxuan expressionlessly. Then he slightly raised his chin, arrogant and looking down on everyone. “Who I eat with—is that something worth discussing in that tone? Isn’t that a little too boring?”
Xie Wenxuan was rendered speechless.
“Looks like you really are bored. Fine, put today’s meal on my tab. I still have something to do. See you at school.” Meng Weiyu slung the schoolbag over his shoulder and walked in a certain direction.
Shen Zhoudu happened to come out of the restroom. When he looked over, he saw who Meng Weiyu had been talking to. He originally wanted to walk over, but Meng Weiyu walked toward him instead.
“Let’s go that way. It’s closer to the entrance. It’s already late, so I’ll have my driver send you home.” Meng Weiyu reached out, hooked his arm around Shen Zhoudu’s shoulder, and led him toward the farther escalator.
Amid Meng Weiyu’s hooking and dragging, Shen Zhoudu tried hard to turn his head, wanting to glance at the person who had just been talking with Meng Weiyu. But the moment he turned, he almost crashed into Meng Weiyu’s face.
“If you dare kiss me, I’ll throw your schoolbag down the escalator.” Meng Weiyu was furious at his behavior.
Shen Zhoudu stretched out his hand and placed it between their faces before he felt safe enough to turn his head back.
Meng Weiyu: “…”
This person really knew how to make others angry.
“That person is Xie Wenxuan,” Shen Zhoudu recognized him.
“You know him?” Meng Weiyu raised his brows in surprise.
“I’ve seen him a few times.” And Shen Zhoudu had sensed a familiar aura from him.
“Oh.” Meng Weiyu remained unmoved.
For no reason, Shen Zhoudu smiled bitterly in his heart. See? Whether people were the same kind or not was that easy to tell.
The two of them went down the escalator. When they turned, Shen Zhoudu casually raised his head. Sure enough, Xie Wenxuan was still staring at them. Shen Zhoudu was originally hesitating over whether to tell Meng Weiyu about this, but when he turned his head, Meng Weiyu had already run to a shop to buy ice cream.
Shen Zhoudu looked silently at Meng Weiyu’s cheerful back.
He understood now. To Meng Weiyu, other people were simply not a matter worth caring about.
“Hurry, eat, eat.” Meng Weiyu held an ice cream in each hand and quickly ran to Shen Zhoudu.
Shen Zhoudu accepted the ice cream and found it very hard to hold back from speaking. “I really want to return what you said at the barbecue restaurant earlier back to you.”
“Hm?” Meng Weiyu was happily licking his ice cream.
“Stuff yourself to death, you starving ghost.” How could he start eating dessert right after finishing a meal?
“How can a starving ghost be stuffed to death?” With this level of attack power, Meng Weiyu did not care at all. He continued walking toward the next escalator. “Hurry and go. Didn’t you say your parents would be home tonight?”
Shen Zhoudu ate the ice cream in his hand. Only when they reached the entrance did he realize Meng Weiyu was still carrying his schoolbag, so he hurriedly said, “I should carry the schoolbag.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Meng Weiyu’s family driver happened to arrive, stopping in front of them. He quickly got out and opened the car door for Meng Weiyu.
Meng Weiyu took off the schoolbag on his back and casually threw it onto the seat. Then he turned back and looked at Shen Zhoudu meaningfully. “Your timing is really something.”
The two of them got into the car.
The driver first sent Meng Weiyu home, then brought Shen Zhoudu to his destination.
“Young Master, I’ll drop you off at the entrance.” The driver was already almost at the neighborhood where Meng Weiyu often stayed.
“Mm.” Meng Weiyu looked uninterested. He often felt that playing with others was very happy, but the parting after the fun only made people feel even emptier and lonelier.
Just as Meng Weiyu was staring blankly out the window, a fluffy feeling came beside his cheek.
“Thank you for your hospitality, Young Master Meng.” Reflected in the car window along with his own face, a fluffy little dog was held by a hand and pressed against his face. “And thank you for taking me in before.”
Meng Weiyu turned his head.
Shen Zhoudu had taken the toy dog out from the bag he had given him today and was pinching his voice as he spoke to Meng Weiyu.
The car stopped.
Meng Weiyu opened the car door and stood outside.
Shen Zhoudu hurriedly handed him the bag. According to Meng Weiyu’s personality, he felt these things would probably only be piled up in some corner, and the young master would never think of them again. Truly, it was all wasted effort.
“Mm.” Meng Weiyu held the car door and froze in thought.
Shen Zhoudu, holding up the bag: “…”
Take the things already!
The driver, preparing to drive away: “…”
Young Master, close the door already!
After finishing his thoughts, Meng Weiyu stepped forward and got back into the car, then shut the door.
Shen Zhoudu and the driver: “…”
“Then I’ll send you home first and come back afterward.” Meng Weiyu fastened his seatbelt again.
Faced with his sudden whims, neither Shen Zhoudu nor the driver managed to react.
“Speaking of this morning, when you came to find me!” Meng Weiyu leaned over and began telling a story.
The driver helplessly drove away.
Shen Zhoudu was made dizzy and confused by his whole series of actions. He could only numbingly listen as Meng Weiyu’s voice beside him fired like a cannon, shaking his head until it became even emptier.
In this unpredictable atmosphere, Shen Zhoudu arrived home.
“Hurry and open the door and leave.” Meng Weiyu did not know why he was sitting there without moving.
Shen Zhoudu acted according to each instruction. He opened the door and picked up his schoolbag. Unlike Meng Weiyu’s ever-changing unpredictability, he decisively closed the car door. Seeing him leave, Meng Weiyu was just about to rest for a bit when he saw Shen Zhoudu suddenly bend down and look inside, waving his hand.
Goodbye.
Meng Weiyu pressed his lips together and smiled. Just as he was about to wave back, the driver stepped on the accelerator and quickly left.
The car sped along the road.
Meng Weiyu asked the driver, “Xiao Lin, are you in a hurry to get off work?”
Lin Xiao honestly said, “Young Master, a little.”
Meng Weiyu had no objections. “Oh.”
The driver focused on driving. He was fully concentrated, but unfortunately, the person behind him never stayed quiet.
“Then you must hate me to death for not honestly going home earlier.”
“Young Master, if you keep talking, I’m going to start trembling.” When Lin Xiao chatted with him, he often had the urge to kneel down and beg him to be quiet.
“Haha.”
The driver glanced at Meng Weiyu, who was so bored he was starting to panic, and reminded him of something. “Madam and Sir are still in the apartment right now.”
“Hmph, they’re really thick-skinned enough.” Meng Weiyu smiled sarcastically. Even though he knew that the Madam and Sir Lin Xiao was referring to were his mother and father. “They want money, right?”
Lin Xiao did not dare answer.
“It’s time to let them know that the two of them are already out. My paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents have only one heir, and that’s me.” Meng Weiyu crossed his arms over his chest and nodded as if it were a serious matter. “Today, I’ll help them clean house and chase them all out. That home is where I live alone.”
His tone was casual, and his expression looked extremely childish, but Lin Xiao never once doubted that what he was saying now was only a casual joke.
This time, Lin Xiao drove straight in and took Meng Weiyu to the parking lot. Meng Weiyu checked their position and greeted Lin Xiao. “I’ll need you to work overtime today. The overtime pay will arrive tomorrow. Is that okay?”
Lin Xiao smiled and nodded. “At Young Master’s command.”
“It’ll be quick. One hour is enough.” After Meng Weiyu finished speaking, he quickly walked toward the elevator and disappeared from Lin Xiao’s sight.
Lin Xiao played on his phone in the driver’s seat for a while. About an hour later, at the same entrance, a young man and woman appeared with luggage bags. Both of them had outstanding appearances and tall figures. Everything they wore was branded, and every movement showed that they came from extraordinary backgrounds.
They walked together, their expressions cold, as if they did not know each other, yet they tacitly walked toward Lin Xiao’s car.
Lin Xiao hurriedly got out, opened the trunk, and took their luggage.
The man tacitly walked toward the passenger seat, while the woman sat in the back.
“I’ll take Madam home first, then go to Sir’s current address,” Lin Xiao said as he started the car and turned the wheel.
“As expected of the son you gave birth to.” The man sneered coldly.
“Did I give birth to him alone? You really speak so interestingly.” Her words were barbed.
“Madam, Sir.” Lin Xiao had no choice but to remind them, “Young Master said that if either of you says one bad thing about him in the car, I’m to throw you out. So…”
“Lin Xiao, you’ve completely become Meng Weiyu’s dog now.” The man spoke coldly, his eyes showing not a trace of emotion.
“This…” Lin Xiao thought of the overtime pay that would definitely arrive early tomorrow morning and stated the facts honestly. “After all, I only serve Young Master now.”
Watching the car leave, Meng Weiyu stepped across the messy living room, humming a song. He picked up the bag nearby and walked into his room. On the sofa, he poured everything from the bag out, picked up that fluffy little dog, and smiled.
“Xiao Yu, Xiao Yu, the annoying people finally left.” Meng Weiyu pressed the little dog’s head and spoke in a pinched voice.
“Yes, although it’s gotten a little boring now.” Meng Weiyu returned to his normal speaking voice.
The little dog turned around to look at Meng Weiyu and spoke again in a different voice. “Then Xiao Yu, let’s look at the gifts.”
“Hmph. I’ve received all kinds of expensive gifts. I don’t care about this bag of things.” Meng Weiyu laughed smugly.
“But Xiao Yu, Shen Zhoudu cooked for you before, so we should still take a look.” The little dog, held by Meng Weiyu’s hand, lay on the bag.
“Then I’ll reluctantly take a look.” Meng Weiyu smiled and put down the little dog, taking out again the things he had already looked at before.
Meng Weiyu took out the chocolates, opened them, and glanced inside. Then he picked up one, peeled off the wrapper, and stuffed it into his mouth.
“Mm, mm, delicious.”
He then opened the package of small cakes and discovered they were something he had never eaten before, so he opened one and stuffed it into his mouth.
“Mm, mm, delicious.”
Although the food was delicious, the thing that made him happiest was still that game disc. Meng Weiyu looked at the game disc and was just about to abandon everything to go play the game when the piece of paper he had ignored slipped out.
He had already saved Shen Zhoudu’s phone number. Logically speaking, this paper was already useless. But Meng Weiyu still folded it and placed it into his little piggy storage jar.
A long time later, when Meng Weiyu thought back to his actions that year, he could indeed understand why two people had said the same words to him, yet one of them had been cut off by him one-sidedly, while the other, after taking a punch, had still successfully obtained him.
The story of life had foreshadowing long ago. But until the day it is revealed, the clues always seem insignificant to us.
