Chapter 21: It’s a Husband-Husband Relationship
Meng Weiyu was forcefully pulled into the car by Shen Zhoudu. He was unwilling and gloomy, but after seeing a familiar face inside the car, he instantly bloomed into a smile.
“Xiao Lin!” Meng Weiyu leaned over the driver’s seat.
“Young Master.” Lin Xiao was startled by him and turned back with a smile. “Are you feeling much better? I was on leave those two days and didn’t know what happened. I didn’t expect you to encounter something so terrible. I sent you messages too, but you didn’t reply. I was very worried.”
Lin Xiao had actually started out as Meng Weiyu’s father’s driver, but after Meng Weiyu was later kicked out, he became Meng Weiyu’s exclusive driver. In Meng Weiyu’s memory, Lin Xiao should still look thirty-five, the perfect age for a person—mature, steady, and thriving. In the blink of an eye, he was now forty-five. The wrinkles on his face were more obvious, and there was white hair on his head too.
Shen Zhoudu was right to call him Uncle Lin. But when Meng Weiyu was young, he had heard the people at home call him Xiao Lin, so he had followed along and called him that ever since.
“Wu, I’m fine, but you’ve turned into Old Lin.” Looking at his wrinkles, Meng Weiyu inexplicably had to face once again the years he had truly lost.
“Cough, cough. Well, Young Master, my child is already in university,” Lin Xiao said, not knowing how to react to his words.
“What about my child?” Meng Weiyu was struck by grief for no reason.
“Here. Please hold him for a moment.” Shen Zhoudu appeared at Meng Weiyu’s side and handed Xueci over, interrupting his rambling.
Meng Weiyu accepted the kitten.
“Meow, meow, meow.” Xueci rolled around in Meng Weiyu’s arms.
Shen Zhoudu closed the car door on Meng Weiyu’s side, then walked to the other side and entered with a pet carrier in his hand.
“Although Xueci is very obedient, later when we leave him in the car, I’m still worried he might accidentally run out or squeeze into some gap, so we still need to put him inside first.” Shen Zhoudu placed the carrier on the seat, then sat in.
Meng Weiyu hugged Xueci tightly, looked out the window to escape reality, and discussed with him, “Later, you go see the doctor. Xueci and I can just wait in the car.”
Shen Zhoudu leaned over, his attitude firm, not allowing Meng Weiyu to muddle through. “No.”
“You’re the one seeing a doctor. I’m already beautiful and kind-hearted enough to accompany you to the hospital entrance.” Meng Weiyu began his familiar act of pretending to be foolish and repeatedly changing the subject. His eyes shifted left and right, but he refused to look at Shen Zhoudu.
“Then, beauty, pity me and accompany me into the consultation room.” Shen Zhoudu first coaxed him patiently.
“I’m not kind to that extent…” Meng Weiyu stubbornly resisted.
“You’re not a child anymore, yet you’re still afraid of seeing a doctor and taking medicine.” Shen Zhoudu was familiar with Meng Weiyu’s personality. He would definitely fall for the simplest provocation.
“I’m seventeen right now!” Meng Weiyu turned his head and glared at him.
“Pretending to be a child.”
“Still better than you pretending to be a puppy!”
Lin Xiao had long grown used to the two of them bickering for no reason. He helplessly shook his head, then drove toward their destination.
When they reached the hospital entrance, the kitten that had originally been held in someone’s arms obediently stayed inside the pet carrier. It curiously poked its head out, looked at the two people tugging at each other, raised its head, and cried, “Meow.”
“Get out of the car.” Shen Zhoudu stood outside, opened the car door, and coldly looked at Meng Weiyu, who was refusing to move inside the car.
“I won’t.” Meng Weiyu lay across the seat, sticking firmly to it, spirited and stubborn.
“Are you getting out or not?” Shen Zhoudu gave him a final warning.
Not only did Meng Weiyu refuse to get out, he even provoked him. “I’m not getting out. If you have the guts, then—wah!”
The instant Shen Zhoudu heard his answer, he immediately bent down and entered the car. His cold, handsome face suddenly enlarged in front of Meng Weiyu’s eyes, charging toward him aggressively.
Before Meng Weiyu had time to escape, Shen Zhoudu firmly wrapped an arm around his waist, held him, and half-carried, half-dragged him out of the car.
Once Meng Weiyu was completely pulled out, Shen Zhoudu closed the car door with his foot.
Lin Xiao cooperated perfectly with Shen Zhoudu. When he heard the sound of the door closing, he immediately stepped on the accelerator and drove off with the kitten meowing twice inside the carrier.
Meng Weiyu’s eyes widened, still shaken.
“Stand properly.” Shen Zhoudu was about to let go.
Meng Weiyu assessed the situation and had no choice but to admit that he was currently at a disadvantage, so he could only temporarily compromise.
Seeing his obedient expression, Shen Zhoudu’s warning bells rang loudly. To prevent Meng Weiyu from running away the moment he was not paying attention, Shen Zhoudu tightly held his hand and led him toward the hospital.
“Let go. Don’t hold my hand.” Meng Weiyu felt embarrassed. Being coaxed to the hospital by an adult made him look like a child, and he was not really a child.
“Alright, alright.” Shen Zhoudu had already made an appointment with the doctor, so he did not need to look for directions at all. He directly brought Meng Weiyu straight to their destination.
Meng Weiyu gave up resisting because of the difference in strength between them. While they were going up on the escalator, he saw their joined hands through the reflective glass.
“Sorry, although I know that in your heart, you and I are in a romantic relationship, from my perspective, this really looks like a parent bringing a child…” Meng Weiyu could not help expressing his thoughts.
Shen Zhoudu turned back and glared at him.
Meng Weiyu thought, You don’t like listening when I talk, yet you’re always fond of chatting with me.
Shen Zhoudu corrected him seriously, “It’s a husband-husband relationship.”
Meng Weiyu felt as if he had returned to class and was being singled out by the teacher because he had forgotten to write a comma.
It was the same sentence again: why did he marry this kind of person? Grown-up Meng Weiyu, you were muddle-headed!
When the escalator was about to reach their destination, Shen Zhoudu let go of Meng Weiyu’s hand and instead held his arm, giving him support so he could step off steadily. His support was natural and reliable. After Meng Weiyu stood firmly, Shen Zhoudu continued holding his hand and walked forward.
Meng Weiyu guiltily turned his head.
Actually, it was not impossible to understand. Shen Zhoudu did have some good points.
Meng Weiyu nodded solemnly, then quickly came back to his senses and shook his head wildly.
No! No! Any normal person would have one or two good points! Shen Zhoudu was only one among thousands of people. Having one or two good points was not anything rare, nor was it something worth paying special attention to.
“Mr. Shen, Mr. Meng.” The hospital staff had received notice and came specially to receive them.
Shen Zhoudu sent Meng Weiyu to the entrance of the consultation room. Both hands pressed on his shoulders, looking as righteous as if he were sending a soldier onto the battlefield.
Meng Weiyu helplessly glanced at him sideways, his expression annoyed.
The two of them—one looked like an upright and refined young man, while the other was a flashy man with dyed hair. If someone had to find the one among them who liked men, Meng Weiyu did not know what kind of sharp-eyed genius would be able to choose the correct answer.
“You have to behave, see the doctor properly, and you’re not allowed to rebel.” Shen Zhoudu tirelessly instructed him.
“Alright, alright.” It was not as if he was so stubborn that others needed to worry about him.
Seeing his unenthusiastic attitude, Shen Zhoudu released his shoulders, leaned closer, and squeezed into the corner with him.
Meng Weiyu raised his head to look at him.
“After you finish seeing the doctor, I’ll buy you games to play at home.” Shen Zhoudu coaxed him. “Do you still remember that game disc you wanted before? I’ll help you find it when we get back.”
“Then fine.” Meng Weiyu reluctantly compromised.
What interrupted their exchange was the doctor standing at the door, looking at them with a smile that was not quite a smile. “Is the patient coming in or not?”
To put an end to this ridiculous scene, Meng Weiyu obediently followed the doctor into the consultation room. Before he fully entered, for some reason, he subconsciously looked back.
Shen Zhoudu stood where he was. According to Meng Weiyu’s narrow-minded thinking, Shen Zhoudu standing guard outside the door was clearly like a police officer watching a fugitive to prevent him from changing his mind halfway. But in the deeper part of his mind, he knew Shen Zhoudu was worried about him.
Meng Weiyu thumped his shoulder, then helplessly decided he might as well cooperate.
The door closed. The psychologist and Meng Weiyu sat facing each other. The psychologist was a young man who looked somewhat unreliable. After asking Meng Weiyu to sit, he discovered that his documents were missing, so he had no choice but to ask Meng Weiyu to sit for a while and drink some tea while he rummaged through the cabinet behind him.
“Hehe.” Shen Zhoudu really knew how to find doctors.
After the doctor found the file, he turned back and glanced over. Meng Weiyu was sitting on the spacious single sofa, his left leg crossed over his right, his injured right hand resting on the armrest, his body leaning left. His left hand propped against the armrest, casually supporting his chin with the back of his hand. His expression looked extremely bored. His eyes seemed distracted, but in reality, they were constantly bright with focus.
“Not easy to deal with,” the doctor could not help muttering to himself.
“Usually, yes. But today, I’ll cooperate properly.” Meng Weiyu heard his words and turned his head with a smile.
“What an honor.” The doctor smiled and brought the documents over.
The doctor’s questions were actually nothing new, merely some routine consultation. Since Meng Weiyu had said he would cooperate properly, he naturally took the initiative to explain his current life.
There was nothing he could not say. He had money, superior looks, and if his grades were not compared to Shen Zhoudu’s, they were not bad either. His only shadow came from his parents.
Before the age of eight, Meng Weiyu had never truly felt parental love at home. His parents were always in a cold war. Their way of treating him well was to give him money and material things.
Then, when he was eight, he learned that his father had an affair outside. The child was about the same age as him, and unlike his own side, that side looked more like a happy, complete family.
His parents began living openly separate lives. His father went to that side, and his mother also got a new boyfriend.
Meng Weiyu really wanted someone to like him, someone to love him, so he always put on a friendly smile and actively socialized.
However, this seemed to be the wrong method. He did not truly approach others because he liked them. It was enough as long as others liked him.
When he was fourteen, his parents finally divorced, ending Meng Weiyu’s nightmare-like childhood.
To be honest, after that, they basically never saw each other.
This spring, they appeared before Meng Weiyu at the same time because they wanted to take back the money they had given up.
They already did not get along, and under the same roof again, they fought loudly. At worst, they even threw things at each other.
“Hiss.” Meng Weiyu suddenly touched his own head, even though the wound he imagined did not exist there. “According to my memory, I was only dragged into their mess this morning. I fell on the floor and hit a decoration. It hurt so much that I almost lost consciousness for an instant.”
That scene was the last thing Meng Weiyu remembered when he woke up in the hospital.
“Mm-hm, I understand.” The doctor reached a conclusion. Then, while he was at it, he asked, “You seem very resistant to accepting your twenty-seven-year-old self.”
“Well, after all, we’re not the same person.” Meng Weiyu elegantly took a sip of tea. “Doctor, what kind of person do you think counts as the same person?”
The doctor revealed a puzzled expression. He did not dare answer casually, so he followed up, “I don’t quite understand this question. Could I trouble you to explain it more clearly?”
“I believe that only someone who possesses the same memories, the same personality, and the same feelings toward things can be considered the same person.” Meng Weiyu smiled and raised his cup toward him from afar. “A twenty-seven-year-old has more memories than I do, and his life experience has advanced further. To me, he is someone very similar but not necessarily completely the same. I cannot deny that I can see his current life is better than mine. Also, perhaps I will recover my memories in the future. But before that possibility arrives, I am the person in front of you, and I will only do things that conform to my own choices. In conclusion, from my perspective, I and the twenty-seven-year-old Meng Weiyu are not actually completely the same person. How do you expect me to calmly accept that I am actually someone else?”
“You’re talking about how you can’t accept being married to Mr. Shen?” The doctor found the true thing he wanted to express from that long string of theories about self-existence.
“He cares more about that matter, I suppose.” Since Shen Zhoudu had taken care of him for a day, Meng Weiyu figured that confessing frankly could be considered repayment for his recent efforts.
“Interesting.” The doctor fell into thought.
Meng Weiyu saw that there was still a sip of water left in his cup, so he simply tilted his head back and finished it, intending to leave.
“Then, following your line of thought.” The doctor asked with great interest, “If there is someone who likes both the person after amnesia and the person before amnesia, then does he love the same person or not?”
I love twenty-seven-year-old Meng Weiyu very much, but when Meng Weiyu was seventeen, I already liked him very much.
“Cough!” Shen Zhoudu’s voice suddenly sounded in Meng Weiyu’s mind, and he choked on a mouthful of water.
He messily pulled out a tissue and wiped his mouth, then raised his head full of vigilance, suspecting that the doctor had deliberately said that.
But the doctor clearly had not noticed anything wrong with him and was still deeply pondering the theory in Meng Weiyu’s words, nodding in fascination.
Meng Weiyu: “…”
The doctor’s first consultation ended, and he sent Meng Weiyu out.
Meng Weiyu stood impatiently at the door. His eyes swept around and found Shen Zhoudu sitting nearby. He walked toward him, just about to leave the hospital together.
“Wait for me.” Shen Zhoudu gave up his seat to him.
“What for? Are you going to the restroom?” Meng Weiyu’s words often jumped out without thinking.
“I’m also going to see the doctor.” Shen Zhoudu seriously explained where he was going, then decisively entered the consultation room and closed the door.
Meng Weiyu: “…”
He stood where he was, frowned, and thought for a moment. Then he pretended to calmly take a stroll, walked around once, and arrived at the door of the room Shen Zhoudu had entered.
He had noticed earlier that the door lock was broken, so with a slight push—
Hehe, a crack appeared.
Meng Weiyu had just pressed his ear over when he heard Shen Zhoudu’s voice, full of resentment and dejection.
“He doesn’t love me anymore.”
Meng Weiyu: “…”
“Cough, cough.” A doctor deliberately walked over and coughed, reminding Meng Weiyu.
Meng Weiyu walked away with a face full of disgust. The doctor immediately came over and properly closed the door again.
Fine. The person who needed to see a doctor was actually Shen Zhoudu.
